My wife, Sherri, is allergic to cats. That, however, did not keep her from setting out a bowl of cat food twice a day for a skinny, emaciated grey cat in our neighborhood. She’d seen him (pretty sure it’s male) digging in garbage bags and felt compassion for the little guy. I named him Wraith - Wrai for short.
For two years now, Wrai has been eating courtesy of Sherri and Dan. We spend about $50 a month keeping him and all the other cats who continually show up in our backyard, fed. I’m guessing we have a dozen regular customers at what has become a feline resort. They lounge around our backyard, hunting and occasionally succeeding in terrorizing the birds we feed. That was never our intention, but it is what it is.
Now that we have a contract on our house, Sherri will be moving this week to North Carolina. We’ve prayed long and hard about this, and we’ve talked to our daughter, Christina, who fosters cats. Our plan is to trap Wrai, take him to the vet, and move him to North Carolina with us. Wrai has never let us pet him. He is a classic feral cat. But he’s our cat whether he knows it or not, and we are his providers whether we like it or not. Trapping and transporting him won’t be easy. Or cheap! But we feel a responsibility to the little fella. It will undoubtedly be traumatic for him, but we believe in the long run, it is the best thing.
Our love and commitment to Wrai pales in comparison to God’s love and watchcare over us. And because of His great love, God often allows us to experience things that can be quite traumatic. But in the end, it is His intention that we experience the best life possible - life in His kingdom, looking to Him for the provision we desperately need for a happy, healthy life.
Jesus loves to take desperate lives, wasting away with no future and hope, and turn them around for our good and His glory. Two things which, by the way, always go together.
I wonder if maybe, through all the pain, heartache, and confusion you are experiencing that is exactly what God is seeking to do in your life?
“For the Son of Man came to seek and to save the lost.” (Luke 19:10)
in Christ,
Dan
