Deep Calls to Deep
“. . . these are the things God has revealed to us by his Spirit. The Spirit searches all things, even the deep things of God.” (I Corinthians 2:10, NIV)
A major theme of my teaching ministry that came more and more into focus during my time as pastor of Seoul International Baptist Church (now, Freedom Village Church) is the difference between knowledge as facts, information, and data versus knowledge as personal relationship.
I love reading the Bible, and I spend a lot of time studying the history, grammar, and doctrines found in this incredible book. I also love the wisdom and life principles found within the pages of Scripture. And God uses these things in my life to guide, direct, and encourage me. But the ultimate purpose of Scripture is to connect me more deeply in my relationship with Jesus.
The same is true for you. As we read our Bibles, God’s Spirit speaks and ministers to our spirits. Our spirits are the center of our beings, the heart and soul of who we are. Our spirits are our “depths.” God seeks a relationship with each of us that connects our “depths” with his “depths.”
“Deep calls to deep,” writes the Psalmist. As you celebrate the birth of our Lord this Christmas season, ask God to speak to you in the deepest places of your life and spirit.
In Christ,
Dan
