Do You Know Me?
Do you know me? How do you know me?
In horses and chariots, painted elephant red?
In the blood of citizens shot dead?
In the costly cross, she wears,
Distracting from the lies she airs.
Do you know me? How do you know me?
As the god of red, white, and blue?
In a nation exclusively for you,
And your kind? Never mind those confined
In cages, sleeping on concrete floors.
Do you know me? How do you know me?
I’m not in the earthquake, wind, or fire;
I can’t be found in the halls of power.
In a still, small voice, I speak,
With those who in wisdom seek
To love the downtrodden, the outcast, and the weak.
This is what the LORD says:
“Let not the wise boast of their wisdom
or the strong boast of their strength
or the rich boast of their riches,
but let the one who boasts boast about this:
that they have the understanding to know me,
that I am the LORD, who exercises kindness,
justice and righteousness on earth,
for in these I delight,”
declares the LORD. (Jeremiah 9:23-24)
