Seasons of Life
That person is like a tree planted by streams of water, which yields its fruit in its season. (Psalm 1:3)
Has it ever occurred to you that when God designed and created our world, he included seasons as a vital part of our lives? Only fourteen verses into the opening pages of the Bible, we read these words . . .
And God said, ‘Let there be lights in the expanse of the heavens to separate the day from the night. And let them be for seasons, and for days and years. (Gen. 1:14, ESV)
Most of us are familiar with the words of Ecclesiastes 3:1 which tell us that “for everything, there is a season.” This truth applies to our earth as it rotates on its axis. It also applies to our lives as they spin us past bright victories and bitter defeats, times of joy and times of suffering, exaltation, and humiliation. All of these things are a part of the lives of every one of us. They are inevitable seasons that we each must pass through.
With this in mind, I want you to think about something with me. Not every season in life is a fruitful one. But even in those seasons of our lives when everything appears dormant and lifeless, God is at work. This is why the psalmist promises that the godly man or woman will yield fruit, but he is careful to tell us that that fruit comes in its season.
No tree bears fruit all year long. There is a time of planting and growth, flowering and buds, fruitfulness and harvest, and yes, dormancy and rest. These are God’s seasons in each of our lives.
Which season of life are you experiencing? Recognize it. Don’t fight it. Wait on the Lord, your fruit is coming.
In Christ,
Dan
