Sergeant Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band by the Beatles is one of my favorites, especially this song. It’s about a couple growing old together. (At least, that’s what the singer hopes.) I’ve been singing it to my wife all year. I turn sixty-five in April. I guess I’ll have to come up with another silly ditty soon. Maybe “Silly Love Songs,” by Paul McCartney.
Anyway, “When I’m Sixty-Four” is a song about love that lasts a lifetime. Sherri and I have been blessed to find that love. Our thirty-ninth anniversary is one day before my birthday in April. Sherri didn’t know that when she set our wedding date. We were engaged after three months and married after five. Talk about a whirlwind romance! But it was also Divine.
I’ll never forget one of our first dates. My calling to serve as a pastor came roaring back into my life after I recommitted my life to Christ. I was baptized (by my father-in-law-to-be), and he recognized my calling pretty early. I’ve shared this in my book, “Masterpiece in the Making,” but Sherri’s Dad heard God’s voice the first time I entered the church, telling him I was going to marry his daughter. He said he’s never experienced anything like it since that day. I’m thinking I probably needed some divine intervention.
So, we’re at Denny’s, and we’re sharing with each other what we believe is God’s calling in each of our lives. I tell Sherri about my long-time sense of calling to serve as a pastor. Then, I ask her what she feels God’s calling in her life is. She turns red as a beet, and says, “A pastor’s wife.”
Well, He was. And He is. I wouldn’t have made it without her.
That’s why I love this song! It reminds of the lifetime of love God has for those who build their lives and marriages on Christ Jesus.
“May your fountain be blessed, and may you rejoice in the wife of your youth.” (Proverbs 5:18)
It is. I do.
In Christ,
Dan
