Wrai's Big Day
Since July, I’ve been chronicling the adventures of Wrai, the cat. We assumed responsibility for this little feral grey cat about two years ago after my wife kept seeing him digging in garbage cans on her walk through the neighborhood. When we moved to North Carolina from Florida, we trapped Wrai (short for Wraith) and took him to the vet, where he was provided the care he desperately needed.
For almost two months now, this outdoor feral cat has been living in our condo. He eats cat pate nightly. And in the past couple of weeks, he has been playing with the toys we bought him. We wake up every morning to see where the little feathered mouse we placed at the top of the stairs ended up!
Wrai has pretty much turned the entire condo into his safe place. Although he never lets us pet him, he does roam freely in and out of our chairs as we watch television each night. In fact, for the last couple of weeks, he has walked around the living room each night until we feed him. He’s not exactly subtle when it comes to food. Of course, most of us are pretty much the same way!
We purchased a cat window with a little door that swings in and out. We also moved his cat tower by the window. Wrai is yet to figure it out. However, something happened last night and this morning that made us realize it is time to prop the window door open and help him out. Pun intended.
We have never heard a meow out of Wrai in all these years. He is a cat of few words. But last night, as he sat looking out the window, he meowed. Then he turned and looked at us. This morning he did the same thing. Twice. I’m not fluent in feline dialect, but even I understood that our little grey outdoor cat is ready to leave the comfort of the condo for the great outdoors.
And so, tonight is the night. We’re going to prop his little door open, put out his food beneath the window, and give the little guy his freedom.
The only question now is - how will Wrai use his newfound freedom? Stay tuned. I’ll let you know.
As always, I see parallels between Wrai’s journey and our journeys with Christ. Galatians 5:1 tells us that Christ has set us free. Then it encourages us to use our freedom wisely. I’m praying that Wrai doesn’t do what I’ve seen all too many followers of Jesus do and become a prodigal cat. He is about to be given the opportunity to come and go as he pleases. To use his freedom wisely, enjoying the care of his protectors and providers while carving out a new life for himself in North Carolina.
God, through Jesus, has given us the gift of freedom. And He wants us to use that freedom to become the people He is calling us to be and to enjoy the blessings He has planned for us. But we must choose to continue to depend on Him.
Are you using your freedom in Christ wisely?
In Christ,
Dan
